Newly Elected Republican Admits to Lying on His Resume

A Republican elected in the November midterm elections for the United States Congress admitted that he lied extensively on his resume, a situation previously denounced by the New York Times and that has generated multiple requests for resignation in the opposition.

Elected by District 3 of the US state of New York, George Santos confessed in two different interviews that he had “beautified his resume,” Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Tuesday.

George Santos admitted never having worked at the prestigious Goldman Sachs or Citigroup banks, nor having a university degree, contrary to what he claims.

The son of Brazilian immigrants born in Queens, New York, categorically ruled out, however, the idea of resigning from the position that he will occupy from January 3 in the House of Representatives, stressing to the New York Post that he is not “a criminal” .

The lies about various facts that appeared on his resume had been revealed by a New York Times investigation, published in mid-December.

In this investigation, the newspaper revealed that the son of Brazilian immigrants and an openly homosexual candidate, lied about various points that he mentioned in his curriculum, such as obtaining a degree in finance from Baruch College, in New York, in 2010, and tickets by Citigroup Bank or Goldman Sachs Investment Bank.

Spokesmen for these three entities assured the New York Times that they found no record of the newly elected official.

Baruch College confirmed to AFP that it did not find any student named George Santos in its files around 2010.

The New York newspaper also questions the operation of an animal protection association, ‘Friends of United Animals’, created by the former candidate, and also considers that his financial consultant, the ‘Devolder Organization’, “is a kind of mystery.”

In the declaration of accounts to the House of Representatives, presented in September, George Santos guaranteed that the company paid him a salary of 750 thousand dollars (706.8 thousand dollars) and dividends between one million and five million dollars (940 thousand and 4.7 million euros).

But, the NYT notes, the form did not include “any information about clients who may have contributed to such loot, an apparent violation of the requirement to disclose any compensation in excess of $5,000 (4,710,000 euros) from a single source.”

In an interview with Lusa a few days after being elected, George Santos said that he went after “a good education” that the United States gave him, assessing that he managed to build “a respectable career” in the financial sector, now seeking to dedicate himself to public service. .

A staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, George Santos positioned himself as anything but a conventional Republican candidate: young (34 years old), descendant of immigrants born into “a poor family” in the Queens borough and homosexual. However, he rejected the labels because they would not “lower taxes on voters.”

Several members of the Democratic Party have called on Republican opposition leader Kevin McCarthy to call a vote to oust Santos if he does not resign on his own.

“The House Ethics Committee should investigate how [George Santos] earned his money,” insisted Ritchie Torres, another pick from New York.

The state of New York, considered pro-Democratic, saw several seats in the House of Representatives go over to the Republican side, allowing this party to obtain a narrow majority in the lower house of Congress. Democrats retained a majority in the Senate.
