Pope Francis said Wednesday that his predecessor, Benedict XVI, “is very ill” and that he is praying for the pope emeritus.
“I would like to ask everyone to say a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Remember him, because he is very sick, asking God for comfort and support, ”said the leader of the Catholic Church at a general audience.
Benedict XVI, 95, was the predecessor of Pope Francis, having been, in 2013, the first pontiff to resign his position in 600 years. He has been living in the Vatican ever since.
There were no immediate comments on the state of health of the pope emeritus and the calls directed to the residence of Benedict XVI are not being answered, the Reuters agency advances.
