Violent winds, polar cold and heavy snowfall… After the United States, the winter storm did not spare its neighbor and affected Canada. The southeastern province of Ontario was hit particularly hard with temperatures dipping to nearly -40C.
As the weather conditions improve, the inhabitants discover the magnitude of the phenomenon in impressive landscapes. In Fort Erie, on the shores of the lake of the same name, the city froze in ice.
The waves froze on the houses
The “blizzard of the century” has given a new meaning to the Crystal Beach district, completely crystallized in snow and ice after the storm’s passage, from the roofs of the houses to the road.
The wind was such that the waves from the lake submerged the houses. With the polar cold, they froze in front of the houses, covering them with a whitish mantle, with a foamy appearance.
“(The waves) were over the wall, probably ten to five meters high,” Derek Tupling, a longtime Crystal Beach resident, told CTV News Toronto.
“Then the water froze on the back of the houses, from the top of the houses down. So you can imagine the volume and force of the water coming up over the wall to hit it and then instantly freezing.” . he continues.
“Bomb Cyclone” near the lakes
Areas near lakes and water holes are particularly vulnerable to this historic storm. In fact, it is the superimposition of a cold air mass with a warmer air mass like the one found over the waters that explains this “bomb cyclone” phenomenon.
On the other side of Lake Erie, in the city of Buffalo, in the United States, at least 31 people died trapped by the freezing cold and the blizzard that made circulation almost impossible.
