Ukraine denounced this Thursday “massive” attacks of more than 120 Russian missiles in the morning on several cities in the country, including kyiv, according to the Armed Forces and the Ukrainian Presidency, which caused at least three injuries.
“The enemy is attacking Ukraine on several fronts, with cruise missiles fired from planes and ships,” the Ukrainian Air Force announced on social media.
“More than 120 missiles have been launched to destroy essential civilian infrastructure and kill civilians en masse,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mikhailo Podoliak said on Twitter, without giving a number of possible casualties.
At least three people were injured in the capital kyiv, according to Mayor Vitali Klitchko.
“Three people were injured, including a 14-year-old girl. They are all hospitalized,” Klitchko wrote on the Telegram social network.
In kyiv, air defense systems were activated to stop the ongoing missile attack, according to the regional administration, and explosions were heard in the city. At least 16 missiles were intercepted.
Fragments of downed Russian missiles damaged two residential buildings in kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, according to the city administration.
Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, was today deprived of electricity by 90%, after this new Russian bombardment that is hitting the Ukrainian energy infrastructure this winter.
“Ninety percent of the city is without electricity (…) Electric buses no longer circulate in the city, there may be water cuts,” said the mayor of Lviv, Andriï Sadovy, on the Telegram social network.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said there had been several explosions in the city. Ukrainian authorities in several regions said that some Russian missiles were intercepted.
The governor of Mykolaiv province in southern Ukraine, Vitaliy Kim, said five missiles had been shot down over the Black Sea. Ukraine’s Northern Military Command said two were shot down in the Sumy region, located on the border with Russia in the northeast of the country.
An industrial facility and a playground in neighborhoods along the Dnieper River were also affected, city officials said. No casualties were immediately reported.
The widespread attack was the latest in a series of Russian attacks on vital infrastructure across Ukraine. Moscow has launched these attacks weekly since October, causing widespread blackouts and cuts in water supplies.
As the latest wave of Russian attacks began today, authorities in the Dnipro, Odessa and Kryvyi Rih regions said they cut off power to minimize damage to critical infrastructure facilities if they were attacked.
The Kremlin had warned that there would be no New Year’s truce in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin justifies his military offensive against Ukraine, which has lasted for more than 10 months, at the cost of heavy losses, saying that the West is using Ukraine as a bridge to threaten Russia.
