North Korea’s leader has presented new military targets to officials of the ruling Workers’ Party, the official state news agency KCNA reported Wednesday.
Kim Jong Un “established new core objectives to strengthen self-defense capability, which will be implemented in 2023″advanced KCNA, without giving details.
The North Korean leader is currently chairing an annual party meeting in Pyongyang, where other party leaders also present policy goals for 2023 in key areas such as diplomacy, security and the economy.
In his report, Kim “analyzed and assessed the new difficult situation that has arisen in the Korean peninsula,” underlining “the direction of the fight against the enemy” that he “should adhere to,” KCNA said, in an apparent reference to the recent escalation of tensions between the two Koreas.
Nuclear-armed North Korea has conducted a record-breaking series of weapons tests this year, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launches, as it continues to defy UN sanctions.
On Monday, the South Korean army also announced that it had deployed fighter jets and attack helicopters after five ‘drones’ [aparelhos aéreos não tripulados] North Koreans entered the territory from the south, with one hitting airspace near Seoul.
In general, North Korea’s plenary sessions at the end of the year reveal the regime’s priorities, both internally and externally.
Analysts said they expect details of the meeting later this week.
