The vice president of Brazil, now interim president due to the departure of Jair Bolsonaro to the United States, criticized the silence of the authorities that, with that, caused social chaos and made the Armed Forces “pay the bill.”
“Leaders who had to reassure and unite the nation around a country project allowed silence or inopportune and deleterious leadership to create a climate of chaos and social disintegration and, irresponsibly, let the Armed Forces pay the bill for all the Brazilians”, said Hamilton Mourão.
The declaration comes from the day that Hamilton Mourão is acting president of Brazil, at 8:00 p.m. by the president of the Senate until Lula da Silva is officially sworn in at around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
“The alternation of powers is healthy and must be preserved”, stressed Hamilton Mourão.
Even so, in his message on national television on the occasion of New Year’s Eve, despite the apparent criticism of Bolsonaro, Mourão defended that, in his opinion, Jair Bolsonaro achieved “significant progress” in the economic and social spheres of the country.
Hamilton Mourão, a general of the military reserve, was elected senator in the October legislative elections and will occupy the position in February 2023, when the new parliament is installed.
Due to Bolsonaro’s unexpected trip to the United States, the government of the captain of the army reserve finally ended with a general in the exercise of a power that, starting this Sunday, will be exercised again by Lula da Silva, who previously governed the country in two. consecutive terms, between 2003 and 2010.
Igor Geilow, a reporter for Folha de São Paulo, remembers TSF that the absence of Bolsonaro is not new.
“Bolsonaro ceased to be president of Brazil on October 30, when he lost the elections. He never acknowledged the result. The only statement he made was to incite people to continue protesting. As is known, last week an individual tried to plant a bomb in a tanker truck at the Brasilia airport. They are dangerous situations. People with arsenals of weapons are arrested, there is a risk of extremist violence: civil war and coup, but the risk of someone doing something crazy in Brazil is very great. Bolsonaro encourages people to do this when he doesn’t recognize the result at the polls and did more than that, he disappeared from public view. He appeared at only one or two military events on a podium. All the negotiation of the transitional government was done. at the ministerial level, to the extent possible, with some coordination, but there was no President of the Republic. Brazil has not had a President for two months,” he explained to TSF Igor Gelow.
