The United States and South Korea are preparing “a coordinated and concrete response to a number of scenarios, including North Korea’s use of nuclear weapons,” a White House National Security Council spokesman said Tuesday.
However, he clarified that these preparations would not include “joint nuclear exercises” as South Korea does not have atomic weapons.
North Korea fired a short-range ballista missile into the Sea of Japan on Sunday, the South Korean military reported, quoted by the South Korean news agency Yonhap. Pyongyang also launched three new ballistic missiles on Saturday.
Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen sharply in 2022, with North Korea conducting almost monthly tests, including the launch of its most advanced ICBM.
