Donald Trump clearly called on elected Republicans on Wednesday to support Kevin McCarthy’s candidacy for speaker of the US House of Representatives, in a dead end after the failure – extremely rare – the eve of McCarthy’s candidacy for the perch in washington.
“Now is the time for our great elected Republicans in the House to vote for Kevin,” the former president wrote on his Truth social network, a rare public endorsement on his part.
19 Republicans did not vote for him
Despite a – very slim – Republican majority, Kevin McCarthy failed to be elected a “spokesperson” on Tuesday, twenty elected Trumpists who oppose his candidacy, considered too centrist. The House must resume voting on Wednesday at noon.
However, Republican Kevin McCarthy was a strong favorite to replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi. His party, which had obtained a narrow majority during the November midterms, had designated him in an internal vote as the future number 1 in the House of Representatives.
In the first round, Kevin McCarthy got just 203 votes, 19 Republicans failed him, and Trumpists considered him too moderate. To be elected, a majority of 218 votes must be obtained.
