A 10-year-old boy who fell into a 35-meter-deep hole on Saturday at a bridge construction site in Vietnam was pronounced dead on Wednesday by the vice-president of the popular committee of Dong Thap (south) province.
The boy, “trapped inside a very deep mouthpiece,” suffered “several injuries” and did not have “enough oxygen to last long,” Doan Tan Buu explained.
“We had given priority to rescuing the child. However, the conditions make it impossible for him to have survived, ”he added to journalists, at the scene of the tragedy.
The death announcement was made after consulting with medical experts, he said. Thai Ly Hao Nam had fallen into a hollow concrete pillar barely 25 centimeters wide, cast for the construction of a new bridge, on Saturday when she appeared to be looking for scrap metal.
Hundreds of people mobilized
Rescuers in Dong Thap province in the Mekong Delta attempted to drill and soften the surrounding soil in an attempt to lift the pillar and extract the child, but to no avail.
A 19 meter long metal tube had been placed around the pillar where the boy was trapped in an attempt to remove the mud and get him out. Rescuers are determined to get the boy’s body out as soon as possible for the funeral, but according to Vice President Doan Tan Buu, it is “a very difficult task.”
Since Tuesday, Vietnam has mobilized hundreds of soldiers and engineers to try to save Thai Ly Hao Nam.
