There are “no regrets” in Washington after a Ukrainian attack killed dozens of Russian soldiers in eastern Ukraine, a White House spokesman said Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Russia had admitted a higher death toll from the attack that targeted Russian soldiers in Makiivka on New Year’s Eve, rising to 89 dead.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council attached to President Joe Biden, did not comment on the figures, while the Ukrainian army’s strategic communications department claimed a much higher toll in the Russian ranks, estimated at 400 dead and 300 wounded.
Russian soldiers in Ukraine, “a legitimate target”
There is “no regret from the (US) administration. This is war. (The Ukrainians) have been invaded and they are fighting back and defending themselves,” he said during an interview with the press.
“Russian soldiers on its territory are a legitimate target of military action for Ukraine, period,” he added.
The strike occurred in an area “of hard combat. And war is a matter of blood,” added this former high-ranking military officer. According to the Russian military, this attack was carried out using US-supplied Himars missile systems. John Kirby has not commented on this.
However, he said: “We are providing and will continue to provide (the Ukrainians) with the equipment and help they need to defend themselves. And yes, we have provided Himars and we very well could provide more in the future.”
