Poland is demanding reparations from Germany at the UN and the EU

Poland will forward its request for reparations to Germany to international fora, such as the UN and the European Union (EU), Polish government spokesman Piotr Müller announced on Wednesday.

The representative of the Polish executive stated to the media in Warsaw that “running away from your crimes is not the best diplomatic attitude” and that Poland “will make that clear both in Europe and in the United Nations”.

Müller stressed that while the German government does not intend to negotiate on this issue, it is “not a closed case for Poland, either in moral or economic terms”.

In turn, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk said this Wednesday that he “does not recognize the German position on reparations to Poland”, announcing that his government will “soon send a written answer to Berlin”.

Polish diplomacy spokesman Lukasz Jasina confirmed on Tuesday that Warsaw had received a written rejection response from Germany to a request to transfer €1.35 billion in compensation for the German occupation of Poland during World War II. World War (1939-1945). ).

In September 2022, the Polish government formalized this petition, approved in a parliamentary vote and supported by data from a report prepared by a historical commission appointed by Poland.

Last September, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, declared that this issue was legally resolved with the agreement signed in 1954 between the governments of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Poland, then allies of the Soviet Union, a message that Berlin’s head of diplomacy, Annalena Baerbock, repeated it shortly afterwards during an official visit to Warsaw.

However, the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, assured that this document is not valid because it was signed by a government imposed by the Soviet Union and is therefore “illegal”.

Last November, Warsaw sent 50 individual letters to Western governments outlining its intention to obtain war compensation and calling for “the cooperation and support” of “all countries friendly” of Poland.

A spokesman for the German foreign ministry confirmed today that Berlin recently “replied” to the verbal note from Warsaw demanding compensation, but did not provide details of the content of the message.
