The 10-year-old boy who fell into a hole 35 meters deep in Vietnam was pronounced dead by authorities on Wednesday.
Ly Hao Nam was picking up scrap on New Year’s Eve when he fell into a hollow concrete pillar at a construction site in Dong Thap province.
Rescue teams from that region of the Mekong Delta attempted to lift the pillar, 35 meters deep and only 25 centimeters wide, which had been buried, as part of the works on a new bridge.
Doan Tan Buu, deputy chief of Dong Thap province, announced the boy’s death
“He was trapped in a hollow pillar at the bottom… with multiple injuries and not enough oxygen for a long time,” he told reporters.

“Our priority was to save the boy. However, the circumstances made it impossible for the boy to survive,” he added.
Buu said the announcement of the boy’s death was made after consultation with medical experts.
Rescue workers are now determined to retrieve the boy’s body as soon as possible so that funeral ceremonies can take place, but Buu admitted it was a “very difficult task”.
Vietnam deployed hundreds of soldiers and technical experts on Tuesday to rescue the boy.
