7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Vanuatu, triggers tsunami alert

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 shook the Vanuatu archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, after having issued a tsunami warning, the United States Geological Survey announced this Sunday.

According to information cited by the Associated Press (AP) agency, the epicenter of the earthquake occurred 23 kilometers from Port Olry and at a depth of 27 kilometers.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the sea coasts located 300 kilometers from the epicenter. So far there are no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Vanuatu is home to some 280,000 people and is prone to natural disasters, with half a dozen active volcanoes, as well as regular cyclones and earthquakes.

It lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic fault lines where earthquakes are common.
