The French head of state, Emmanuel Macron, asked this Sunday for “respect for democratic institutions” in Brazil and stressed France’s “unwavering support” for President Lula, after the invasion of various institutions by Bolsonaro activists.
“The will of the Brazilian people and democratic institutions must be respected! President Lula can count on the unwavering support of France,” Emmanuel Macron tweeted.
“France condemns in the strongest terms”
According to a separate statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “France condemns in the strongest terms the ongoing violence against three institutions of Brazilian democracy: Congress, the Presidency of the Republic and the Supreme Court.”
“These attacks constitute an unacceptable challenge to the result of a democratic election, unambiguously won on October 30 by Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who took office as President of the Federative Republic of Brazil on January 1. The will of the Brazilians must be respected to the people who have spoken supremely”, added the Quai d’Orsay.
“France expresses its support for the democratically elected President Lula and his government. It assures the Brazilian people of its solidarity”, concludes this text.
Several elected French Macronists and the left-wing opposition have denounced the “far-right attacks”, comparing the situation to the invasion of the Capitol in Washington by supporters of former President Donald Trump in January 2021.
Hundreds of supporters of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro invaded Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court in Brasilia on Sunday, a week after the inauguration of left-wing President Lula, whose election they reject.
