At least 300 arrested after raid of public institutions in Brasilia

At least 300 supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro were arrested for invading and destroying the headquarters of Congress, the Presidency and the Federal Supreme Court, in an alleged attempt to overthrow the Government.

In a message posted on the social network Twitter, the Civil Police of Brasilia reported that “300 detainees have already been arrested. The investigations continue until the last member is identified.”

Hours earlier, the Brazilian Justice Minister, Flávio Dino, had warned that the number of detainees for the alleged coup attempt against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva could increase in the coming hours.

The minister also reported that they hijacked 40 buses that arrived in the Brazilian capital in the last few hours with hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters, who invaded the central region of Brasilia where they carried out violent acts.

Dino added that the authorities will work to identify the financiers of the acts that made possible the trips of supporters of the former Brazilian president, who left from different parts of the country.

The episode experienced on Sunday in Brasilia recalled the invasion of the US Capitol, which occurred on January 6, 2021, by supporters of former US President Donald Trump, who maintains a friendly relationship with Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro supporters invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the country’s three powers in Brasilia on Sunday, forcing federal intervention to restore order and drawing condemnation from the international community.

The Military Police managed, however, to regain control of the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace, as well as completely evict Praça dos Três Poderes, in the Brazilian capital.

The invasion began after militants from the Brazilian extreme right, supporters of the former president, defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s elections, called a protest on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, in Brasilia.
