The Chinese government said on Monday that it is “strongly opposed to the violent attack” on the headquarters of the executive, legislative and judicial powers in Brazil, which was invaded on Sunday by supporters of the far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro.
“China is monitoring the situation carefully and strongly opposes the violent attack against federal authorities in Brazil,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a press conference.
Beijing “supports the measures taken by the Brazilian government to calm the situation, restore social order and preserve national stability,” the spokesperson added.
Hundreds of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro today invaded and vandalized the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), headquarters of the legislative, executive and judicial powers, in a demonstration calling for military intervention to overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a week after his inauguration.
The protesters advanced and broke the barriers installed by the police, with images of the invaders inside the green hall of Congress, inside and outside the Planalto Palace and the STF, to be published on social networks.
Brazilian police used tear gas to unsuccessfully try to stop the protesters.
