The prime minister spoke by phone with the Ukrainian president on Monday and added that he had informed Volodymyr Zelensky that Portugal would strengthen humanitarian support and participate in the “formula for peace” proposed by the Ukrainian head of state.
The topics discussed in the telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine were transmitted by António Costa through his account on the social network Twitter.
“I spoke today with the president [Volodymyr] Zelensky. Portugal will strengthen humanitarian and military support for Ukraine and will also actively participate in the Peace Formula proposed by President Zelensky”, wrote the leader of the Portuguese executive.
The Portuguese Prime Minister was in kyiv on May 21, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and expressed Portugal’s readiness to participate in a program to rebuild schools and kindergartens in Ukraine or, alternatively, to sponsor the reconstruction of a territory area to be indicated by the Ukrainian authorities.
Among the options for the reconstruction of destroyed areas in Ukraine, the head of the Portuguese executive expressed his preference for schools and kindergartens, saying that the Portuguese state has recent experience in carrying out these programs to modernize educational establishments.
In kyiv, at the end of a meeting with the Ukrainian Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, António Costa signed an agreement granting financial support of 250 million euros to Ukraine.
A month after their trip to kyiv, on June 21, António Costa and Volodymyr Zelensky spoke by phone about Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union.
In that conversation, the prime minister confirmed “Portugal’s support for granting candidate status to Ukraine in its accession process to the European Union.”
The prime minister also revealed that he had informed the President of Ukraine of Portugal’s readiness “to deepen political and technical support for Ukraine’s accession process.”
