The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, condemned this Sunday the invasion of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro to the seats of Brazilian power, defending that the people and the democratic institutions of Brazil “must be respected”.
“I condemn today’s attack on the democratic institutions of Brazil. The will of the Brazilian people and the country’s institutions must be respected,” Guterres wrote on the social network Twitter.
The UN Secretary General expressed his confidence that the will of the people will be respected because “Brazil is a great democratic country.”
The president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, decreed federal intervention in Brasilia after hundreds of supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro invaded and destroyed the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), headquarters of the legislative powers , executive and judicial.
The protesters, who broke through the police protection barriers, are calling for military intervention to overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, one week after his inauguration.
The Military Police managed, however, to regain control of the STF headquarters and the Brazilian head of state promised that all those responsible for the invasions would be punished.
