The president of the United States of America, Joe Biden, considered the violence of supporters of the former Brazilian head of state, Jair Bolsonaro, who invaded the headquarters of the legislative, executive and judicial powers of Brazil “scandalous”.
This was the first direct reaction of the President of the United States, in Texas, after hundreds of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro invaded and destroyed the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in Brasilia.
On the social network Twitter, the US president also condemned “the attack on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil.”
“Brazil’s democratic institutions have our full support and the will of the Brazilian people cannot be undermined. I want to continue working” with the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, transmitted Joe Biden.
Earlier, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed US support for Brazil’s democratic institutions and condemned the violence.
Earlier, the charge d’affaires of the US embassy in Brazil, Douglas Koneff, “vehemently” condemned the invasion of the Brazilian seat of power, considering that it was “attacks on democracy.”
On the other hand, the Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended, on the social network Twitter, that the United States should “stop guaranteeing refuge to Bolsonaro in Florida.”
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro left for the US on December 30, two days before the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as head of state, missing the ceremony in Brasilia that would have included handing over the sash presidential to his successor. Bolsonaro would have traveled to Florida to settle in a resort owned by former US President Donald Trump, at his invitation.
“Almost two years after the US Capitol was attacked by fascists, we see fascist movements abroad trying to do the same in Brazil. We must continue to stand in solidarity with Lula da Silva and his democratically elected government.”
The protesters, who broke through the police protection barriers, are calling for military intervention to overthrow President Lula da Silva, one week after his inauguration.
The Brazilian president decreed federal intervention in Brasilia and the Military Police managed, meanwhile, to regain control of the STF headquarters. Lula da Silva promised that all those responsible for the invasions will be punished.
