The executive director of Amnesty International (AI) in Portugal, Pedro Neto, warns that this Sunday’s invasions of the headquarters of the organs of power in Brazil could “infect” other countries and are “concrete proof that something in the world it’s not going well.”
Speaking to TSFPedro Neto points out that what happened in Brasilia has similarities with the invasion of the Capitol, in Washington DC, two years ago.
“It was very similar and it could infect other camps and other countries”, because “this type of authoritarian leader loses elections and does not accept this defeat”. Thus, “directly or indirectly”, they encourage “the seizure of power, the insurrection and destruction of private or state property, not accepting the results of democracy.”
“We can never take democracy for granted.”

These are signs of “a world and an environment that is increasingly shrinking the space for freedom of expression, be it political and civic, be it media,” a “broader” phenomenon of concern to AI. “These signs and these episodes are concrete proof that something in the world is not right and that we can never take democracy for granted.”
Regarding the extradition of Jair Bolsonaro, which has been requested by some US congressmen, Pedro Neto underlines the differences between the world of “political rhetoric” and that of justice work.
What may be at stake in a Bolsonaro extradition process.

For there to be a request for extradition “more is needed” than political rhetoric: “First of all, evidence, evidence and investigation are needed.”
Despite being in the United States, Bolsonaro has already disclaimed any responsibility for what happened and, “as far as we know, this trip is temporary, there will be a market return to Brazil, therefore, it is not a leak.” .
Even so, and given the “conditions”, it is necessary “to understand if he is a fugitive or not”, after “there is an arrest warrant for an investigation”.
“Therefore, one thing is political rhetoric, another thing is legal work and the investigation of Justice,” he points out.
