The US Department of Justice and the FBI are investigating documents classified as “confidential” that were found in US President Joe Biden’s office, dating from the period when he was still Obama’s vice president.
According to the BBCAll ten documents were discovered by Biden’s legal team in November in a locked cabinet at the Penn Biden Center in Washington and turned over to the National Archives.
Biden’s lawyer says the documents refer to his term as Obama’s vice president, but the contents of the files are unclear.
According to CBSwho cites a source familiar with the matter, these documents do not contain nuclear secrets and were kept in a box, along with other non-confidential files.
In a statement, Richard Sauber, Biden’s special adviser, said the files were discovered by the US president’s lawyers, who were clearing out office space just before the midterm elections.
“Since the discovery [dos documentos]the President’s personal lawyers cooperated with the Archives [Nacionais] and the Department of Justice in a process to ensure that all Obama-Biden administration records are properly preserved in the Archives,” Sauber said.
However, Biden’s special counsel did not explain why there was a two-month delay in the disclosure of these documents, since the discovery occurred in November, before the US midterm elections.
Donald Trump, who in August of last year was the subject of raids by the FBI at his real estate in Mar-a-Lago, a luxury resort in Palm Beach, Florida, has already reacted to the discovery of these documents in Biden’s office. In a post on his social network, Truth Social, Trump asked: “When is the FBI going to invade Joe Biden’s many homes, and maybe even the White House?”
Trump is under investigation for allegedly resisting requests to return some 300 confidential documents he brought to Mar-a-Lago after leaving office.
