Algeria: a minor killed by “a warning shot” during an anti-drug operation

The police officer was “taken into police custody, his weapon subjected to a ballistic survey and an investigation opened by the El Harrach prosecutor’s office,” the Algerian police said.

A minor was killed on Tuesday during an anti-drug operation on the outskirts of Algiers by “a warning shot” from a police officer, who was detained as part of an investigation ordered by the prosecutor’s office, authorities said.

Police “were surprised” by youths who wanted to “obstruct a search” in Baraki, on the outskirts of Algiers, and one of them fired a warning shot, hitting a youth who died of his injuries at hospital, according to Press release from the General Directorate of the National Police (DGSN) published on its Facebook page.

The DGSN specifies that the policeman was “taken into police custody, his weapon subjected to a ballistic survey and an investigation opened by the El Harrach prosecutor’s office”, of which the Baraki district is a part.

The prosecutor of the El Harrach court also ordered the autopsy of the victim who was “about 16 years old”, according to the prosecution.

A thousand psychotropic pills

The DGSN points out that in the raid the seizure of about a thousand psychotropic pills was achieved, an unspecified amount of narcotics and the arrest of two people.

Security services regularly announce arrests and the seizure of large quantities of drugs.

In recent statements to the press, the director of prevention at the National Office for the Fight against Drugs and Drug Addiction (ONLCDT), Ghania Mokdache, announced an increase of more than 200% in cocaine use and 100% for other drugs during the first 10 months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

It also said that more than 60 tons of cannabis were seized in the first 10 months of 2022.
