Wagner’s chief said on Tuesday that the Russian paramilitary group had seized control of the town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine, Russian state news agencies reported, adding that fighting was continuing.
No other press or military authority has yet confirmed the veracity of this statement.
“Wagner has taken control of the entire territory of Soledar,” Yevgueni Prigokhine said in a press release quoted by the official Russian press.
“The number of prisoners will be announced tomorrow,” he added, without further details.
Zelensky pays tribute to the soldiers
The announcement comes as Kyiv said on Monday that Ukrainian troops were managing to resist Russia’s escalating offensive. Ukraine has not yet reacted to Wagner’s statements.
Earlier in the afternoon, at the request of the Russian militia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even paid “a special tribute to the warriors of the 46th Separate Airmobile Brigade for their courage and firmness in the defense of Soledar.”
This same Ukrainian brigade would be in great difficulties at the front according to the testimony of a soldier to the American media CNN. There would be so many dead that no one would count them in a “critical and difficult” situation.
