Argentina records 10th case of pneumonia of unknown origin

Argentina’s health authorities announced this Friday (2) the tenth case of pneumonia of unknown origin in the northern Tucumán province of the country, where an outbreak of the disease has already killed three people.

“The Ministry of Health announces that a new patient has been identified that is linked to the string of cases of pneumonia of unknown origin,” a statement from the province said.

“This is an 81-year-old male patient, with comorbidities, hospitalized in a serious condition, with mechanical respiratory assistance,” he added, without giving further details.

The outbreak so far appears to be confined to a private clinic in the city of San Miguel de Tucumán, 1,300 kilometers from Buenos Aires. Of the 10 infected, eight are health professionals.

Authorities have already ruled out covid, flu, flu and hantavirus as causes of the mystery illness.

Samples from the patients are analyzed by the Instituto Malbrán, a reference laboratory in Argentina.
