Swiss authorities suspect that several cases of sabotage at ski resorts in the country, in which artificial snow cannons were vandalized, are the work of climate activists, national television RTS reported on Wednesday.
One of these attacks took place the last two nights of 2022 at the Villars-sur-Ollon ‘resort’, where two machines for the production of artificial snow were disabled by unknown persons.
In the following days, another similar incident was recorded in the adjacent ski area, in Diablerets, when three of these snow cannons and several electrical cables were disconnected.
Police in the canton of Vaud, the affected area and one of Switzerland’s most popular ski destinations, are investigating similar incidents in neighboring French mountainous areas for which the global environmental movement “Extinction Rebellion” has claimed responsibility.
Exceptionally high temperatures this winter have left half of Switzerland’s ski resorts (mainly those below 1,500 meters) without snow for several weeks, although snowfall in recent days has allowed reopen some this week.
