The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards honored the third season of HBO’s “Succession” as best drama series, on a night in which “The White Lotus” and “Ted Lasso” dominated with multiple wins in their categories.
“We are incredibly grateful to have this wonderful honor,” said creator Jesse Armstrong, who also took home the award for best writing for a drama series for his work.
In the victory speech, the British screenwriter referred to the accession to the throne of King Charles III, in the United Kingdom, saying that “it has been a great week for the succession”.
“Succession” had 25 nominations and won several categories. Starring Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin, the story centered around a family conglomerate with enormous media power and also earned Matthew Macfadyen the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The actor beat out nominees like Christopher Walken, Billy Crudup and John Turturro.
Still in dramas, Julia Garner was best supporting actress for “Ozark” (Netflix) and Zendaya won the best actress Emmy for “Euphoria” (HBO). Koreans Lee Jung-jae was the best actor and Hwang Dong-hyuk the best drama director, both for the series “Squid Game” (Netflix).
In the category of best miniseries, anthology or television movie, ‘The White Lotus’, also from HBO, won five statuettes. It was named best miniseries of the year, received writing and directing honors, both given to creator Mike White, and even awarded Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Barlett Emmys for best supporting actress and supporting actor in this category, respectively.
But at the top awards for acting in a miniseries, anthology or TV movie, the statuettes went to Michael Keaton for “Dopesick” and Amanda Seyfried for “The Dropout: The Story of a Fraud.” Both are Hulu series that portray true stories.
Keaton was visibly excited to receive the Emmy. “This is one of the most special projects I’ve ever worked on,” he said. “It means a lot”.
Amanda Seyfried, who played former businesswoman Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout,” said receiving the award was a very good feeling. “It was the best time of my life,” she said of filming the miniseries.
In comedy, Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” won top honors. It was considered the best comedy series of the year and gave the Emmy for best comedy actor to Jason Sudeikis, who said he was “surprised and flattered”.
It also earned Brett Goldstein the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy and earned MJ Delaney the award for Outstanding Achievement in a Comedy.
In the remaining comedy categories, Jean Smart was best actress for “Hacks” (HBO) and Sheryl Lee Ralph was best supporting actress for “Abbott Elementary” (ABC). This series, about one of the worst elementary schools in the country, also landed creator Quinta Brunson an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Writing.
Ralph delivered one of the most emotional acceptance speeches of the night, which he broke into song.
“For anyone who has had a dream and thought that dream could not and would not come true, I am here to tell you that this is what it takes to believe, what it takes to strive,” he said. “Never give up”.
The 74th Television Academy Awards ceremony took place this morning at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
