The Supreme Court decides to arrest the former military police commander of the Federal District

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) ruled on Tuesday the arrest of former military police commander of the Federal District (PMDF), Colonel Fábio Augusto Vieira, who was acquitted on Monday following the invasion of radicals at the headquarters of Brazil’s three powers.

The decision was made by Judge Alexandre de Moraes who said hours before this decision that “the institutions will punish all those responsible. Those who carried out the acts, those who financed them, those who encouraged them, through action or omission”.

Fábio Augusto Vieira was in charge of the military police operation during Sunday’s attacks by thousands of extremists in Brasília. This colonel was acquitted the next day.

Shortly after the attacks on the headquarters of the three powers of the Brazilian state, the magistrate ordered the temporary removal of the governor of Brasília, Ibaneis Rocha, and his secretary of security, Anderson Torres, for alleged neglect of functions and collusion with the invaders .

The judge also ordered the dismantling of camps set up in front of army buildings across the country to demand a coup, declaring jail time for anyone who refused to leave.

Brazil’s new director of the Federal Police (PF), Andrei Rodrigues, assured today that he will not tolerate any anti-democracy actions and that he will act “decisively” to crack down on Sunday’s attacks on the headquarters of the three government departments.

Rodrigues, who today took charge of Brazil’s main police force with national jurisdiction, was Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s head of security during the presidential campaign that brought the progressive leader to power in Brazil for a third time.

The official took charge of one of the South American giant’s main security establishments two days after radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who did not accept the results of the presidential election, seized the Planalto Palace, Congress and the Supreme Federal Court (STF). ), headquarters of the three powers, in Brasília.

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro raided and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasília on Sunday, leading police to intervene to restore order and condemn the international community.

The Marechaussee succeeded in regaining control of the headquarters of the three powers, in an operation that resulted in approximately 1,500 arrests.

The invasion began after militants from Brazil’s far right, supporters of the former president, who was defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s election, called a protest at the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

However, Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes impeached Federal District Governor Ibaneis Rocha for 90 days as both the governor and Bolsonaro’s former security minister and former justice minister Anderson Torres acted with negligence and omission.
