Brazilian Chamber of Deputies approves federal intervention in capital security

Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies approved a federal intervention in Brasilia declared on Sunday by the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to allow the central government to assume the management of public security in that state.

The intervention was justified by the inability of the Brazilian capital’s authorities to prevent the invasion of public institutions promoted by “bolsonaristas” last Sunday, when groups of extremists destroyed the headquarters of the three powers: the Planalto Palace, the Congress and the Federal Supreme Court.

The unanimously approved measure will remain in effect until the end of January and must be ratified by the Senate on Tuesday.

“The people want respect for the law, institutions and public property. The best answer we can give right now is more democracysaid the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira.

Despite the unanimous approval of the measure by deputies, some Bolsonaro supporters, such as Liberal Party (PL) deputies Carla Zambelli and Bia Kicis, sought to delay the vote because they needed more time to analyze the presidential decree.

For Kicis, the measure was not justified because the situation in Brasilia was already under control.

“The police tried to contain it, there were failures, but it must be said that it is already under control”argued.

The only two benches in the Chamber to abstain were those of the Liberal Party (PL), Bolsonaro’s formation, and the New Party, the Folha de São Paulo newspaper reported.

While the federal decree of intervention has the force of law since it bears the president’s signature, the order requires the approval of both chambers of Congress, which can approve or reject the text without changing it.

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro raided and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasília on Sunday, leading police to intervene to restore order and condemn the international community.

The Marechaussee succeeded in regaining control of the headquarters of the three powers in an operation that resulted in at least 1,500 arrests.

The invasion began after militants from Brazil’s far right, supporters of the former president, who was defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s election, called a protest at the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

However, Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes impeached Federal District Governor Ibaneis Rocha for 90 days as both the governor and Bolsonaro’s former security minister and former justice minister Anderson Torres acted with negligence and omission.
