The newly Republican-controlled US House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted two anti-abortion bills, with largely symbolic significance. A way for the Conservatives to satisfy their base, having exposed their divisions on the big day last week during a difficult vote for their “spokesperson”.
The first resolution, supported this Wednesday by all Republicans, condemns the attacks against “anti-abortion establishments, associations and churches.” The text refers specifically to the acts of violence that took place as of May 2, 2022, when a leak revealed that the Supreme Court of the United States planned to overturn the right to abortion soon.
The resolution accuses, among other things, “the Biden administration of failing to take action to respond to these sweeping attacks.”

The second text requires doctors present during an abortion to “provide adequate care” to try to “save” the aborted fetus. The family planning organization Planned Parenthood strongly criticized the resolution as “nothing more than a fear manipulation strategy aimed at stigmatizing abortion.”
The vast majority of Democrats voted against these measures, and their leader, Hakeem Jeffries, considered that the decision to abort “should only be made between a woman, her family and her doctors, period.”
However, the scope of these two texts is limited, because they have no chance of going to the Senate stage, of which the Democrats retain control.
The Republican crackdown on abortion rights could also be a double-edged sword, with most Americans, even in conservative states, backing its protection.
