According to the document, two soldiers died and four were injured, of which two are out of danger, in operations carried out in the districts of Muidumbe and Macomia, regions where incursions have been registered in recent days and local authorities believe they are responsible. of rebel groups.
Operation Vulcão IV has the help of foreign forces that support Mozambique in the fight against terrorism and aims to “intensify measures to pursue and destroy the terrorist bases of the enemy that terrorizes the north of the Messalo river, Muidumbe district, and west of Chai, in the Macomia district,” according to the Mozambique Ministry of Defense.
The province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency for five years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The insurgency has provoked a military response since July 2021 with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts next to gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged in the south of the region and in the neighboring province of Nampula.
