Ukraine on Monday denied losing Soledar to Russia, which Moscow claimed it had won, saying fierce fighting was continuing in the small eastern town.
“There is still fierce fighting in Soledar,” Sergei Cherevaty, a spokesman for the eastern command of the Ukrainian army, told Ukrainian television.
Cherevaty claimed that the Ukrainian armed forces had the situation in Soledar under control, but admitted that they are “in difficult conditions”.
The statement followed Moscow’s announcement that its forces had captured the city in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
“On the night of January 12, the liberation of the city of Soledar was completed,” the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, was quoted as saying today by the official TASS news agency.
