Strengthened security against the threat of new attacks by Bolsonaristas

The Brazilian government has decided to strengthen security across the country on information that more radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro have called for new demonstrations for this Wednesday.

The announcement was made by the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, in statements to the ‘media’, after both the Attorney General’s Office and the Prosecutor’s Office asked the Federal Supreme Court to take measures to prevent possible terrorist attacks and acts of violence. to prevent. and vandalism.

“We have taken steps to strengthen security across the country due to the fact that invitations for new demonstrations are circulating. We are taking a precautionary attitude regarding the safety of the Esplanada dos Ministérios [a avenida onde se situam os principais edifícios públicos em Brasília] and in cities across the country”Costa said.

The reinforcement was decided after the confirmation that in groups of “Bolsonaro supporters” there are calls on social networks for demonstrations at 6 p.m. local (9 p.m. in Lisbon) next Wednesday, in Brasília but also in cities such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.

The calls state that these are manifestations for the “restoration of power”, in allusion to Jair Bolsonaro’s return to power 11 days after the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as Brazilian president.

The most radical “Bolsonaristas”, who do not recognize Lula da Silva’s victory in October’s presidential elections and advocate a coup d’état or overthrow, this Sunday carried out a violent attack on the headquarters of the presidency of the republic, the congress and the Federal Supreme Court, in Brasília, last Sunday.

Nearly 1,500 followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro were arrested for acts of vandalism, which caused major and serious damage to the three buildings, after the police, despite a late response, managed to remove the protesters from the seats of power.

In its request for urgent action to the Federal Supreme Court, the Advocacy General of the Republic (AGU) claims that the so-called “Mega National Demonstration for the Resumption of Power” called by the radicals constitutes a “new attempt to rule of law”.

The government body is urging the Federal Supreme Court to order that federal public security forces and regional administrations take the necessary immediate measures to prevent invasions and roadblocks.

The AGU argues that the state must be protected and protected, for which it is necessary “both to prevent abuses of the right of assembly, which are used as illegal and unconstitutional by real acts that undermine democracy”.

The body also asked for the specific and temporary restriction of the right to demonstrate and the imposition of fines on natural and legal persons who provide logistical and financial support to the protests convened.

The AGU also asked the STF to order the red-handed arrest of anyone who disobeyed its decision and to authorize the blocking of social network groups used to call for demonstrations.
