Joe Biden will deliver his State of the Union address on February 7, the traditional political address of presidents to the United States Congress.
Following tradition, it was the speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, who invited him in a letter on Friday to speak with parliamentarians.
As expected, the Democratic leader accepted this invitation, his spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, said calmly.
A speech before a divided congress
For the first time since he was elected, the president will address a divided Congress: Republicans won a slim majority in the House after November’s midterm elections. Meanwhile, the Democrats maintained control of the Senate.
“The American people sent us to Washington to set a new course for the country, find common ground, and discuss their priorities,” Republican “speaker” Kevin McCarthy pleaded in his letter.
