Putin available for peace talks, Kremlin says

Russian President Vladimir Putin is available for peace talks, the Kremlin said Wednesday, quoted by Sky News.

The Russian presidency believes it is “preferred” to find a diplomatic solution to end the military conflict in Ukraine, but points out that the position of Kiev and the West makes peace negotiations impossible.

It is not the first time that Russia has made itself available to sit at the negotiating table. In December, Putin had admitted that Moscow would need to reach an agreement with Kiev to end the conflict, which has been going on since February 24.

At the time, Putin said Russia was ready to negotiate “acceptable solutions” with “all parties” involved in the war in Ukraine, but accused Ukraine and Western allies of “refusing” dialogue to end the conflict.

Also this Wednesday, the Kremlin emphasized progress in Soledar but declined to declare a Russian victory, as the mercenary group Wagner announced control of this city in the Donetsk region.

“We don’t need to hurry. Let’s wait for official statements,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“Tactical successes are of course very important,” added Peskov.

The head of Russia’s Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigojin, said on Wednesday that mercenaries had taken Soledar, a town near Bakhmut in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. The Ukrainian military says Soledar “is and always will be Ukrainian”.
