Peru: President Dina Boluarte rules out resigning after protests with 42 dead

Peru’s President Dina Boluarte, whose country is plagued by protests that have left at least 42 dead in five weeks, on Friday ruled out resigning as protesters demand.

“Some voices of supporters of violence and radicals demand my resignation, inciting the population to chaos, disorder and destruction. I tell them responsibly: I am not going to resign, my commitment is to Peru,” Dina Boluarte said in a message. to the nation broadcast on state television.

Resignations in the government

Three members of Dina Boluarte’s government resigned in two days: the Minister of Labor, Eduardo García, who disagreed with the government’s handling of the protests, the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Rojas, and the Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations. , Greece Rojas.

Since the start of the crisis, clashes between protesters and police have left at least 42 dead, including a policeman who was burned alive by the crowd, according to the Ombudsman.

The protests broke out after the dismissal and arrest on December 7 of the left-wing president Pedro Castillo, accused of having attempted a coup by wanting to dissolve the Parliament that was preparing to remove him from power.

A “treacherous”

Dina Boluarte, who was vice president of Pedro Castillo, succeeded him in accordance with the Constitution. But the protesters, who see her as a “traitor”, demand her departure and immediate early elections.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH), which has completed an inspection mission in Peru, requests an impartial inquiry regarding the repression of demonstrations by the people, estimating that these indicators point to an “excessive use of the force”.

The Peruvian prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation for “genocide” against Ms. Boluarte and other senior officials.
