Supreme Federal Court includes Bolsonaro in the investigation of the attacks in Brasilia

The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil authorized the inclusion of Jair Bolsonaro in its investigation into attacks by supporters of the former president against the three powers, after the request of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR).

According to the court document, Judge Alexandre de Moraes accepted the request of the Public Ministry on Friday, which cited a video posted by Bolsonaro on the Facebook social network two days after the riot.

Alexandre de Moraes rejects any extradition of the former Brazilian president and said Bolsonaro’s interrogation will have to wait.

“Given the news that the former president is not in Brazilian territory, the request to carry out the interrogation of the represented person, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, will be considered later, at the appropriate moment,” he wrote, quoted in the local press. .

The PGR had asked the Brazilian STF this Friday to investigate Bolsonaro as the mastermind and instigator of the attacks carried out by supporters of the former president against the three powers, in Brasilia, on Sunday.

“The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) requested the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to include representation against former President Jair Bolsonaro in Investigation 4,921, which investigates the instigation and intellectual authorship of anti-democratic acts that led to episodes of vandalism and violence in Brasilia last Sunday”, read a statement published on the website of the Federal Public Ministry.

Members of the Federal Public Ministry indicate that, by sharing the video on their social networks “on January 10 questioning the regularity of the 2022 presidential elections”, Bolsonaro would have made a public incitement to commit a crime.

Bolsonaro removed the video the next day, Wednesday.

Already after the request to open an investigation, Bolsonaro’s lawyer denied any involvement of the former Brazilian president in radical attacks on the three powers.

“President Jair Bolsonaro vehemently repudiates the acts of vandalism and depredation of public property committed by infiltrators in the demonstration. He never had any relationship or participation in these spontaneous social movements carried out by the population, ”said Frederick Wassef, in a note sent to the media.

“President Jair Bolsonaro has always repudiated all illegal and criminal acts, and has always spoken out publicly against such illegal conduct, just as he has always been a defender of the Constitution and democracy. Throughout his government, he has always acted within the four lines of the Constitution, ”added the former president’s lawyer.

The attacks culminated in an escalation of attacks against democracy by the ‘bolsonaristas’, who from the day after the elections began mobilizations to encourage a coup against the current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Faced with the attacks on the headquarters of the three powers, far-right radicals blocked roads, invaded a police station in Brasilia in mid-December and, days later, left an explosive device next to the capital’s airport, which was deactivated by the police.

On Sunday, supporters of Bolsonaro invaded and destroyed the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, the Congress and the Planalto Palace, in Brasilia, forcing police intervention to restore order and raising the condemnation of the international community.

The invasion began after Brazilian far-right militants who support the former president, defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s elections, called a protest on the Esplanada dos Ministérios in the Brazilian capital.
