Six injured in a knife attack at Gare du Nord in Paris

A man injured six people this Wednesday in a knife attack at the busy Gare du Nord station in Paris, according to the latest report from authorities. All suffered minor injuries. The attacker was shot by police and is in hospital “between life and death”, according to French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

The previous balance of the French authorities indicated five injured.

The man was detained at the station by police after being shot by police and injured, said a police source, who did not wish to be identified.

According to French newspaper Le Figaro, the Paris police said the incident happened early in the morning, around 6:40 am (5:40 am in Lisbon), and one officer was injured.

“One person injured several people at Gare du Nord this morning,” Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on Twitter.

“He was quickly neutralized. Thanks to the police for their effective and courageous response.”

So far, there are no indications that it is a terrorist attack, according to an AFP source interviewed, who said that this hypothesis is “unprivileged”.

The French prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation entrusted to the criminal brigade of the Paris judicial police.

So far, the motives for this attack are not known. Police officers suppressed the attacker with their weapons. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the perpetrator was treated on the spot by the emergency services before being taken to hospital.

The state railway company SNCF said the injured were evacuated from the station shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene of the attack.

The incident caused delays in early morning train traffic, according to the departure board of the state railway company SNCF.

Gare du Nord serves as the terminus for several national and suburban rail lines, as well as international ones, including the one between Paris and Brussels and the Eurostar between Paris and London.

It is recalled that France remains on alert after a series of deadly attacks by Islamic radicals since 2015.

Gérald Darmanin was at the scene of the incident around 9 a.m. (8 a.m. in Lisbon), surrounded by a significant security device, to “thank the security forces” along with the head of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, the prosecutor Laure Beccuau, and the mayor of the French capital, Anne Hidalgo.
