Some 40 vehicles collided this Sunday on an icy road near Seoul, in an accident that left at least one dead and dozens injured, according to local authorities.
The fire department in northern South Korea’s Gyeonggi province said the number of injuries could rise as rescue teams respond to the accident on the Guri-Pocheon highway, according to the Associated Press.
Published photos of the accident show police officers and rescuers with stretchers running through a crowd of cars on a rubble-strewn road.
Many of the vehicles, including at least one bus, had damage to the front or rear, and others had dents on the sides.
One of the fire department officials said at least three drivers were in critical condition and another person died after being transported to a hospital for cardiac arrest.
According to the same source, at least 29 other people suffered minor injuries.
