A Russian reaction to Western promises. The Kremlin vowed on Monday to “burn” the tanks that Westerners, including London and Warsaw, intend to hand over to Ukraine.
“These tanks are burning and they will burn,” Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian presidency, said in his daily conference call with reporters.
Various Promised Weapons
Westerners have long been reluctant to deliver heavier weapons to Kyiv, fearing they would be drawn into war. But in early January, France, Germany, and the United States finally promised to send armored infantry or reconnaissance tanks: 40 German Marders, 50 American Bradleys, and French AMX-10 RCs.
The UK announced on Saturday that it would deliver 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine “in the coming weeks”, the first country to supply Western-made heavy tanks to Kyiv. Poland said it was ready on Wednesday to deliver 14 German Leopard 2 heavy tanks, which requires Berlin’s approval.
Kyiv had already received Soviet-designed heavy tanks—almost 300—from its allies, but none Western-made yet.
