“They will burn.” Russia threatens to destroy Western tanks delivered to Ukraine

Russia on Monday threatened to destroy tanks that Western countries, including Britain and Poland, intend to hand over to Ukraine, saying the vehicles “will burn.”

“These tanks burn and will burn,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told his daily telephone briefing.

Peskov reaffirmed that Western countries are using Ukraine “to achieve anti-Russian objectives” and that the Kremlin remains committed to achieving “the objectives of the special military operation”, a euphemism used by the Russian authorities to describe the war against the neighboring country. .

Motivated and strengthened by increased military and financial aid, Ukrainian forces pushed back the Russian army and inflicted blows last spring and fall.

However, kyiv says it needs heavy tanks, light armor, long-range missile systems and anti-aircraft defenses to definitively defeat the Russian army and retake all Moscow-occupied territory in eastern and southern Ukraine.

On Saturday, London announced the shipment of Challenger 2 armored vehicles to kyiv, in what will be the first delivery of Western-made heavy tanks to Ukraine.

The military offensive launched on February 24, 2022 by Russia in Ukraine has so far caused the flight of more than 14 million people -6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 7.9 million to European countries-, according to the The latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

Right now, 17.7 million Ukrainians need humanitarian aid and 9.3 million need food aid and shelter.

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing Russia from the political point of view and economic sanctions.

The UN presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war 6,952 dead civilians and 11,144 wounded, stressing that these figures are far below the real ones.
