Black boxes recovered from plane that crashed in Nepal

Nepalese authorities said on Monday that a flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder were recovered from the site of the plane crash on Sunday in Pokhara, Nepal, which killed 68 people.

Nepal Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Jagannath Niraula said the crates were found on Monday, a day after the ATR-72 plane crashed, killing 68 of 72 people on board.

Niraula said that anything found will be turned over to investigators.

Pemba Sherpa, a spokesman for Yeti Airlines, also confirmed that flight data and cockpit voice recorders were found.

Two more bodies were found this Monday morning, a day of national mourning declared by the country’s authorities.

Nepalese rescue teams are still searching today for bodies among the wreckage of the aircraft that fell to the bottom of a 300-meter ravine, located between the old Pokhara airport, built in 1958, and the new international terminal opened on January 1.

“So far we have found 68 bodies. We are looking for four more bodies (…). We are praying for a miracle to happen. But the hope of finding anyone alive is nil,” said Tek Bahadur KC, the head of Taksi. district, where the plane crashed.

The twin-engine Yeti Airlines ATR 72, which was leaving the capital Kathmandu with 72 people on board -68 passengers and four crew members- crashed at around 11:00 am (5:15 am in Lisbon) this Sunday, when it was carrying out the approach maneuver to the airport of Pokhara.

It is still not clear what caused the accident, the deadliest in the country in three decades. The weather was mild and windless on the day of the accident, according to local authorities.

Pokhara, located 200 kilometers west of Kathmandu, is the gateway to the Annapurna Circuit, a popular Himalayan trekking route.
