The Council of Europe calls for the release of Russian opponent Alexei Navalny

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, requested this Wednesday the release of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, detained for two years and for whom that European organization is “deeply concerned” about the conditions of detention.

Today “marks the second anniversary of the arrest of Alexei Navalny in Russia after the attempted poisoning of which he was a victim,” Buric recalled.

Solidarizing with the Russian opposition, the Croatian leader assured that Navalny “remains imprisoned in very harsh conditions”, despite “calls from the Council of Europe to release him without delay, in accordance with a decision of the European Court of Human Rights”. . ECHR)”.

“I call on the Russian authorities to promptly implement the court ruling and the subsequent decisions of the Committee of Ministers on the Navalny case,” requested the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

Navalny had reported flu-like symptoms for the past week and claimed no access to medical care. His followers denounced an attempt by the Kremlin to slowly “kill” him.

“I also want to express my deep concern about the descriptions of ill-treatment and cruel conditions of detention to which Alexei Navalny is subjected, with serious repercussions on his health. I appeal to the Russian authorities to ensure that he receives treatment needed immediately.” said Buric.

The opponent of the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, was arrested in Russia in January 2021, upon returning to the country after being treated in Germany for severe poisoning suffered in Siberia, which he attributes to the Kremlin.

He was sentenced to nine years in severe prison for fraud.

However, it is unlikely that Russia will give in to the requests of the Council of Europe.

Moscow closed the door on the Council of Europe in mid-March 2022, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian MPs also passed a law in June last year authorizing Russia to stop applying ECtHR decisions.
