Microsoft will lay off 10,000 workers

The North American computer group Microsoft announced this Wednesday that it will lay off some ten thousand workers at the end of March, justifying the decision with the economic situation and changes in customer priorities.

The reduction corresponds to slightly less than 5% of the company’s workforce, which will also change its computer equipment and reduce workspaces.

These measures will have a charge of 1,200 million dollars (about 1,100 million euros) in the accounts for the second quarter.

In a letter to workers, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella explained that “customers accelerated spending on PCs during the pandemic” and are now trying to optimize them to “do more with less.”

Other large groups in the technology sector have recently announced workforce reductions, such as Amazon and Salesforce, which have announced in recent weeks that they will cut 18,000 and 8,000 jobs, respectively.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, also announced a plan in November that calls for a reduction of 11,000 workers.

Microsoft, which currently has 221,000 employees worldwide, has hired 75,000 since 2019, according to a note by Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, calling these layoffs no surprise.

Last year, Microsoft had already carried out two workforce reductions, one in July, which accounted for less than 1% of the workforce, according to the company, and another in October, the second involving less than 1,000 employees, according to the ‘ place’. Axios, quoted by AFP.
