French director Paul Vecchiali has died at the age of 92

“Even if he has not always received the recognition he deserved, his work is still appreciated by those who know him and regarded as a great influence by a whole haze of young disciples,” wrote Le Monde.

Director, screenwriter, producer and actor, Paul Vecchiali has signed about 50 films, including Les Russes du Diable (1965), Ladies Ladies (1974), “Requiem for a Woman” (1979) ed Le Cancer (2015), which he directed and co-starred with Catherine Deneuve.

In 2017, Vecchiali was in Portugal on the occasion of a retrospective held by the IndieLisboa Festival in collaboration with the Cinemateca Portuguesa.

At the time, Cinemateca recalled that Paul Vecchiali was a contemporary of the Nouvelle Vague, but his cinema was not attuned to any movement: “Vecchiali’s cinema is very unique and bears the mark of the independence of its conditions of production and the freedom of its approach” .

Vecchiali made his film debut in 1961 Little Dramasbut the work remains unpublished, as it was negatively considered lost.

From the filmography, the comedy is one of the most famous films Ladies Ladiesexhibited in Venice Requiem for a woman, Again (1987) in which he discusses the rise of AIDS in the 1980s, or Les sept deserters (2017) and bias trainfilmed simultaneously, with the same team and cast.

Vecchiali founded the production companies Les Films de Gion, Unité 3 and Diagonale and wrote about cinema in several publications, most notably in the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma.
