French President Emmanuel Macron called on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday to “re-respect the ceasefire” with Armenia after new deadly clashes between the two countries.
During a telephone interview, “he told President Aliyev of the urgency of ending hostilities and returning to respect the ceasefire,” the Elysee said, while at least a hundred soldiers from both sides died in the fighting on Tuesday. .
Emmanuel Macron “said his great concern” about these new confrontations and insisted on the need to “intensify the negotiation efforts” between the two countries.
He recalled his “willingness to contribute to this together with all partners, in particular the European Union,” added the French presidency.

The French president also spoke during the night from Monday to Tuesday with the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinian. He then called for “respect for the territorial integrity of Armenia.”
Azerbaijan, for its part, accused Armenia of “intensely” violating the ceasefire announced by Russia.
The European Union called for an end to hostilities and announced that European Council President Charles Michel, who is leading a mediation between Yerevan and Baku, will discuss with the two belligerents.
US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken called on the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to urge them to make peace.
