Jacinda Ardern resigns as New Zealand Prime Minister

The announcement was made at a press conference, detailing that he will remain in office until February 7, while his party -Labor Party- finds a new person to take his place, according to the NZ Herald newspaper.

“I gave everything to be prime minister, but it also cost me a lot,” he said.

“I can’t and shouldn’t get the job done unless I have a full tank and a little bit in reserve for the unplanned and unexpected challenges that inevitably arise. Having reflected on the summer, I know I no longer have that little bit more in the tank to do it. justice. to work. It’s simple,” he continued.

Ardern assured that behind his decision there is “no unknown scandal”.

“I’m human. We give everything we can for as long as we can and then the time comes. And for me, it’s time,” she said.

Given this decision, the Labor Party must elect the new leader of the party force and the new prime minister on Sunday.

However, those elected must govern until October 14, the date on which the legislative elections are held, according to the NZ Herald.

Ardern, 42, became prime minister in August 2017, making her the youngest person in New Zealand history to hold the post.

The outgoing ruler came to power after agreeing a coalition with the Greens and New Zealand Nationalists, ending a decade of Conservative rule.
