The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced this Thursday that he is “on a trip to kyiv” where he will have to discuss with the head of state Volodymyr Zelensky the new support measures for Ukraine, which is calling for faster arms deliveries.

The two leaders “will discuss concrete measures (…) to guarantee that [a Ucrânia] be stronger”, declared Charles Michel in a videotaped testimony and broadcast through the social network Twitter.

NATO allies have promised kyiv “support by sending heavy and modern weapons” to counter Russia’s offensives, the European Council president added.

“Ukrainians are fighting for their own territory, for the future of their children. But they are also fighting for the common European values ​​of peace and prosperity. They need and deserve our support”, the president of the organization also declared. representing the 27 states of the European Union.

In addition to meetings with the Ukrainian head of state, Charles Michel will also meet Prime Minister Denys Chmyga and members of the kyiv Parliament (Rada).

This visit is announced a day after the meeting of the contact group for Ukraine, in Ramstein, Germany, which brings together some 50 countries led by the United States.

Discussions in Germany focused mainly on issues related to the supply of armored vehicles and modernized air defense systems.

The UK has already promised to send 14 Challenger 2 cars and the Polish government says it is prepared to send German-made Leopard 2 armored vehicles.

The shipment (re-export) of Polish vehicles depends on authorization from Germany.

In Berlin, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is under pressure to authorize the shipment of tanks used by several NATO countries.
