Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, sent a letter to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, inviting him for a talk – his wife, Olena Zelenska confirmed.
Zelensky has repeatedly tried to reach out to Xi Jinping since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February, hoping that Beijing will use its leverage over Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, Zelenska said she had a letter for Xi and revealed details at a press conference on Wednesday.
“It is an invitation to dialogue and I hope with all my heart that there will be a response to this proposal”told the press.
China and Russia announced a “no borders” partnership shortly before Putin ordered his troops to invade Ukraine.
China tried to position itself neutrally in the war, but strengthened ties with Moscow, especially in the energy sector.
However, some analysts suggest Beijing could eventually act as a mediator to negotiate an end to the fighting in Ukraine.
In August, Zelensky told the South China Morning Post that he had “officially asked for a meeting” with Xi, adding that dialogue between the two would be “helpful”.
