After a State of the Union address, a candidacy speech? According to US media, including CNN and CBS, the occupant of the White House, Democrat Joe Biden, is about to announce his candidacy for a new term as president of the United States.
According to CNN, the octogenarian plans to announce his candidacy a few days after the highly anticipated State of the Union address on February 7. And despite the discovery of several confidential documents at his residence, the Democrat’s candidacy plan would not have changed.
However, a source within the Democratic Party tells CBS that Joe Biden’s candidacy could finally be announced in March.
“I think I can beat Donald Trump again”
At 80, Democratic President Joe Biden will turn 81 in the 2024 US presidential election. And if elected, he will complete his second term in 2029 at age 86.
His age is a source of shame within the Democratic Party, analyzed the New York Times last summer. Since then, many scenes and other blunders have provoked ridicule from his opponents, some who do not hesitate to describe the US president as “senile.”
But faced with Donald Trump, candidate for the Republican Party primaries, Joe Biden believes in his chances. “I think I can beat Donald Trump again,” he told CNN in October.
Especially since the Democrats managed to limit the Republican “red wave” during the November 2022 midterm elections, in particular by retaining the Senate. And the Republicans seem divided, as shown by the deputies of Donald Trump’s party, unable for a week to name a “spokesperson” at the head of the House of Representatives.
When asked by CNN about his age a few months ago, the oldest president ever elected in the United States defended himself. “The question is, ‘Can you do the job?’ I think I can do the job,” he said.
