A Qantas Airways flight traveling from Auckland, New Zealand, to Sydney, Australia, landed safely on a single engine on Wednesday after issuing a warning as it flew over the Pacific Ocean.
Qantas Flight 144, with 145 passengers on board, landed at Sydney Airport after a three and a half hour flight between the most populous cities in neighboring countries.
The Boeing 737-838 “experienced a problem” with one of its two engines about an hour outside of Sydney, Qantas said in a statement.
Qantas said the pilot shut down the engine but did not specify the problem.
“While in-flight engine failures are rare and would naturally be of concern to passengers, our pilots are trained to manage them safely and the aircraft are designed to operate on a single engine for an extended period of time,” he added.
Sydney Airport said rescue crews were on standby as a precaution, including firefighters, ambulances and police.
